GOTN’s Eroticon 2018 Meet and Greet

Pic by the awesome Stuart F Taylor

It’s just over a month until Eroticon 2018, the conference for sex bloggers, erotica writers and other erotic creative types held in Camden on 17th/18th March. Just typing that sentence makes me simultaneously excited and nervous, because Eroticon was so good to me when I was a baby blogger that I desperately want it to be as good for others as it was for me. Molly, Michael and I have been working hard at the planning, and all our amazing speakers are getting ready to give their talks/workshops. All that’s left now is to introduce ourselves, and get ready for March 2018…

If you’ve been to Eroticon before you’ll know that we try to have an online ‘meet and greet’ before the event itself. This is so that people who want to announce they’re coming along can have a chance to make friends and say ‘hi’, and feel like when they turn up at the Friday night drinks they won’t be walking into a roomful of strangers, but a room of welcoming friends. If you’re coming along, check out the Eroticon 2018 meet and greet post here, then answer as many of the questions below as you’d like to on your own blog.

NAME (and Twitter if you have one)

Girl on the Net, GOTN, Sarah if any of that is too much of a mouthful – @girlonthenet on Twitter.

What are you most looking forward to about Eroticon 2018?

Talks-wise, I am always obsessed with the nerdy-worky-blog-related talks, so Fetish.com’s session on raising your writing visibility on Google, Kayla Lords’ ‘making money from your blog’ as well as Sarah Holliday + Sarah-Jane’s session on financial wizardry for sex bloggers: all those are right up my alley. We’ve also got some amazing speakers who are incredibly good at promotion and reach – I’m really excited to meet Hannah Witton, Oloni, Annabelle Knight and Kendra Holliday and I know they’ve all got so much experience to share. Jamie Lawson and Lori Smith both have incredible talks lined up too – I want to hear all about Jamie’s work as a queer anthropologist and Lori’s talk on the History of the Bra. Oh, and I went for drinks with Nina Saini the other day and she has so much experience of the adult industry, her talk is going to be fascinating.

I’m going to fall into that trap of just listing everyone’s talk because I really want to see all of them, aren’t I? Somewhere in between all this I need to fit in hosting the ‘Future of Sex’ panel on Saturday morning and doing a keynote that combines witty insights into the sex landscape with not melting into a puddle of anxiety on stage. By the time the Saturday night social rolls around, I will be the one downing pints of gin.

We are creating a play list of songs for the Friday Night Meet and Greet. Nominate one song that you would like us to add to the play list and tell us why you picked that song

Pull Shapes – the Pipettes

Because it is impossible for me to hear it and not grin from ear to ear and/or launch into some terrible dancing.

What’s the first career you dreamed of having as a kid?

Either the most boring answer in the world (because it’s so obvious) or the most exciting one (because it shows dreams can come true): I wanted to be a writer. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to write about, though I think I imagined page-turning crime novels with badass heroines and smouldering villains to vanquish. At other points in life I’ve flirted with other career ideas – for a while it looked like I’d become a lawyer, but then I realised that lawyering requires an extraordinary amount of homework. Seeing some of the amazing things lawyers have done this year though – in the fight to protect people’s rights both in the UK and further afield – I’m glad I’m not there messing it up for them. I’ll just watch from the sidelines and cheer them on.

Weirdest place you’ve ever gotten up to mischief (define ‘mischief’ however you like…)

Well there was this one time, in a wheat field…

I’ve been to lots of cool places, but I’m not particularly mischievous, so I am actually going to go with the wheat field, because I did do mischief in one a long time ago.

Tell us two truths and a lie about yourself

I have lied to Ed Miliband. Twice.

I have four stepbrothers, one of whom is a professional hypnotist.

When I was 16, I accidentally set fire to a sweet shop.

Complete the sentence: I want…

…everyone at Eroticon to have an amazing time, and come away with ideas and contacts that they can use throughout the year.

I’m very excited to meet you in person! And reading your thoughts and excitement over attending workshops has made me a lot more excited to go to a few now.

    Is number 2 the lie?

  • Molly says:

You mean I can’t call you Moon Queen?

And by the way who is actually sorting out this playlist? laughs

    Mollyx

    • Girl on the net says:

Haha oh shit I think that might be me? I’ll get on it!

And of course – you can always call me whatever you like =) xx

  • Aurora Glory says:

I think your last answer is definitely achievable, if my experience last year is anything to go by! In regards to the truths/lie I am going to guess number 1 is the fib? Do we find out lol?
I hope I get the chance to say hello, but I imagine you will be very busy. Especially with all the sessions you want to attend! Although.. I feel the same about wanting to see them all lol!

Ah I am so excited to see you again at Eroticon! Meeting you last year was really lovely, and I was so moved by your post-Eroticon post! I was super nervous my first time and it was really nice to be able to meet and (hopefully!) be helpful to you when you were nervous your first time too. I’ll be quite busy but hopefully still able to get stuck in and have fun, especially during the social events when there’s not so much running-around-the-venue-like-a-headless-chicken to be done =)

Number 1 is actually true. It was an excruciatingly awkward thing I had to do at my old job, back when ed miliband was leader of the labour party. I’ll tell you the story over a drink at Eroticon maybe =) He was such a lovely dude though I felt awful having to put on my work hat and do my bosses’ bidding. x

  • Petra Pan says:

OMG you set fire to a sweet shop?! Ha ha, if that had been a lie that would have been so inventive! Looking forward to meeting you at Eroticon 😃

    • Girl on the net says:

Haha yes =) I should clarify that it certainly wasn’t deliberate (a stray cigarette that I hadn’t put out properly) and absolutely no one was hurt! It was mortifying though, and if my colleague who I was working there with hadn’t acted quickly we’d probably have had to evacuate and I’d have got fired. As it was the whole shop smelled like burning paper for about a week afterwards!

Looking forward to seeing you at Eroticon! x

  • Isabelle Lauren says:

I am really looking forward to meeting you soon! It’s so funny, because I feel like I already know so many of the Eroticon attendees, so it’s going to be great to meet everyone in the flesh.

I guess #2 is the lie, the other two are just so good.

  • Pixie Heart says:

Oh wow great song choice! Lol if your up and dancing , I’m likely to be busting a few moves! (Does that make me old?)

I’m so looking forward to the same talks as you! Lol although my Dom has made a plan of what I’m allowed to sit in on! (So I don’t get over excited or anxious)

So looking forward to this now!

    Pixie x

Ps – do I use ! To much.?!

  • May More says:

Ah, you do the playlist! Well, my request is a bit of a funny one, a Bruce Springsteen song – am so hoping you can find it as know I will feel super nervous on the Friday night meet and greet and that Bruce song, along with a few gins will calm me! Looking forward to saying hi to u or buying you a drink – so appreciate what a positive influence you have in the sex blogging community. In fact, it was after I first came across your blog that I decided to blog myself. So many thanks x

  • I can’t wait to see you again next week!

  • Hislordship says:

Hopefully I will get the opportunity to say hello and put a face to a name!

  • Godemiche says:

You are the one of the most people I would love to drink gin with;)
Let the weekend begin in a great company!

  • Tabitha says:

Ach, I really wanted you to have a hypnotic brother! 👍😂
I’m so excited for another Eroticon! And just in case no one has heard it (impossible, everyone has heard your audio porn surely) your voice is the most gorgeous sound.
I’m looking forward to hearing it again in real life x x
