Iron-on decal instructions

When choosing fabric to iron the decal on to, as a general guide, cotton t-shirts and pants are the easiest, but any fabric that allows you to iron on a ‘cotton’ setting should work. Here’s a little guide on what the decal will and won’t stick to if you’d like to put it somewhere other than on fabric!

Be more careful with stretchier fabrics, especially when you’re lining up and placing the design – one of my testers said it’s worth highlighting that just because it looks straight on a t-shirt doesn’t mean it’ll look straight when that t-shirt fits the curves of your body, so it might be best to put the item of clothing on before working out where to place the decal.

To apply:

  • Line the design up on your garment and work out exactly where you want it to sit when the clothing is worn.
  • Set your iron to ‘cotton’, no steam, and press your garment to make a flat surface.
  • Place the transfer where you want it, shiny side (plastic sheet) UP. Use a solid surface like an ironing board or a towel folded on a table so you can give it some pressure, and use a pillow case as a press cloth between your design and your iron.
  • Iron over the design for 15 seconds, paying close attention to the edges.
  • Wait until it cools. This is important, patience is useful here!
  • When it’s cool enough to touch, start pulling up the sheet – if the vinyl still sticks to the sheet rather than the fabric, try pressing it again, or coaxing it off the sheet and onto the fabric with your fingernail.
  • I’ve included a little logo to practice with, so best to have a go at using this before you add the main design. Test it out inside the hem if you don’t want the logo visible, or on the outside if you want the logo on the pants/t-shirt/whatever you choose as well!

If you have any questions, or think there are tips I could do with including here, please do let me know! And if you’re up for it, I’d love to see pics of whatever you end up creating with these – feel free to tag me in on Mastodon or BlueSky if you post them!
