GOTN’s 2019 Eroticon meet and greet

Amazing Girl on the Net author illustration by Stuart F Taylor

It’s that time of year again! Just over two weeks to go until Eroticon, the UK conference for sex writers, bloggers, and other erotic creative types. If you’re in or near London on 16th/17th March, and you want to join us for fun workshops and talks on all things sex and writing (and some awesome demos of kink equipment and sex toys from the sponsors) buy a ticket and start planning which of the awesome talks you want to come to!

Each year Molly kicks off a ‘meet and greet’ post – a way for attendees/speakers/sponsors to introduce themselves before the conference starts. This is the friendliest conference I ever go to, and I think this is one of many reasons why. So here’s my meet and greet, for those who don’t know me…

NAME (and Twitter if you have one)

Girl on the Net – @girlonthenet on Twitter, ‘Sarah’ if you meet me in meatspace.

Tell us 3 things you are most looking forward to at Eroticon 2019.

Well firstly I am looking forward to ALL THE TALKS. I haven’t been able to participate 100% in Eroticon since it moved to London, because for the last couple of years I’ve been helping to organise it, so while I’ve had an incredible time and caught some of the key talks/panels, I’ve always had to have one eye on looking after sponsors/making sure everyone knows where everything is/flapping around like a headless chicken. This year, Molly and Michael – the two hardest-working people I know of – have put everything together, so I can sit back and enjoy as many talks as I can get my bum on a seat for.

Specific things I’m excited about:

  • Insatiable – a history of women and desire. This is a talk by @GoingMedieval first thing on Saturday, and I am ridiculously excited about it.
  • Fantasy sex – porn vs reality. Jet Setting Jasmine and King Noire are running a session on porn sex vs sex in reality, and I can’t wait – I went to one of their talks at Eroticon a couple of years ago and they have so many insights on the industry.
  • Sex blogging: a human right issue. Zebra Rose is going to give an overview of the ways in which sex blogging is a human right issue, and how we can use our blogging platforms to protect and defend human rights.

I’m going to add an extra one here because I am a rule breaker: I am super excited about the Friday/Saturday night socials, because again last year I was nervous and stressed and panicky (not least because the pub we went to on Saturday night was a HELL OF A LOT FULLER than we had been led to expect, and it was breathing room only). This year Molly has pulled off something just shy of a miracle and there’ll be a much better space for the Saturday night. And that means I can get much drunker, meet more people, and not collapse into a trembling pile of stress.

OH and I am also desperate to try out the ElectraStim AXIS. I know they’re sponsoring the conf and they have promised – PROMISED – me that I can have a go on it.

We are creating a play list of songs for the Friday Night Meet and Greet. Nominate one song that you would like us to add to the play list and tell us why you picked that song.

This song is on a playlist my best friend made for me. It came on once, purely by chance, as I happened to walk past the old office I used to work in. It gave me so much joy to realise that I’d managed to escape that job, and I felt confident I’d never have to go back to anything like it again. I wouldn’t have been able to do that without Eroticon, and the great advice and support I’d received from attendees/speakers/sponsors every year since 2014.

What is your favourite item or book you’ve purchased so far this year?

I don’t tend to buy that much stuff, but I’m going to begrudgingly go for my vape because I’m trying to quit smoking.

You can have an unlimited supply of one thing for the rest of your life, what is it? Sushi? Scotch Tape?

Cigarettes.

SHIT I fucked it already.

What is your favourite quote from a movie?

“Welcome to Earth.”

– Will Smith, Independence Day, shortly after punching an alien in the face.

What is your word suggestion to next years Eroticon anthology?

Future. (I’d love an Eroticon antho that’s about hopes for the future/sex tech!)

Complete the sentence: I feel…

…like it is probably time for me to prep my Eroticon talk if I’m going to manage not to embarrass myself.

Go check out other people’s meet and greet posts, and write one of your own if you’re coming to Eroticon too!

(not going, but don’t i wish)

    Fuzzy (in online blogs)

Connections with real people who think along the same lines i do; i.e., perverts, deviants, etc.
Exposure to more great writing, both fiction and none
Getting to meet people whose brains i already admire.

Electric Avenue — because there was a stripper at a place where I was a bouncer in the 1980s who had this song as part of her set, and I used to lmfao, because it is soooo not a stripper song lyrically.

“i was aiming for the horse…” The Magnificent Seven

Humiliation (there’s always room for more erotic humiliation)

I feel … “like i just got home”

    Dear GOTN,

I would really love to come to England. I would go to the Eroticon and would look around for you. There is another thing that I might love even more. That would be to see a lot of the standing stones and assorted Pagan sites.

The song! I think you might want to edit the interview out. I like this kind of music and it often rings true.

PS Have fun and remember the hangover follows the party. I know how to quit smoking. The vape thing is probably a good start and then when you are ready you can put it down too. I really do know the way. There is a little angst, but really not that much. I quit smoking many times and the ‘weening’ way is the absolute worst. I haven’t smoked in fifty years. I don’t want to either. Yes, yes, yes I know. I am old, but, but not often a gentleman. In spirit I am!

    Dear GOTN,

Somehow I lost the previous message. Probably for the best. I would really love to go to England. I would go to Eroticon to meet you. There is something I have wanted to do for a long time. See the standing stones and other Pagan things

So you are quitting smoking? It’s a hard one. I have broken the back of many habits. I know how to quit smoking. The vape thing may give you a good start. Weening is the WORST way. When you want to know how to put smoking or the vape down I would be pleased to tell you. It is a little angst, but in four or five days it’s done.

The song. I love these songs. You may have to edit the interview off of the front. Then it is short and good.

Fitting it into the lineup might be a problem. Go easy on the wine and save a fourth of the bottle for breakfast.

Hi Phillip! Links are automatically held back in the mod queue, so it just takes a little longer for them to show up on site as I have to approve them manually. There are other things that cause links to be held back, like certain keywords or if someone is commenting on the site for the first time. They should appear eventually though as long as people follow the comment policy!

Thanks for the suggestion, and your support re: quitting smoking. It’s not easy but I’m on it. Ta!

I guess that I said a key word and Akismet dumped me.

I hope that you have a great time at Eroticon. I would go if I could. I would love to go to England. Good luck with your battle to quit smoking. Lots of people have won the battle.

  • Molly says:

Good luck with the nicotine battle. I have done it more than once but finally I feel like I have thwarted that beast, my advice is keep going and don’t feel too bad if you fall of the wagon now and then just make sure you get back on each time and eventually you will get there

  • It’ll be good to see you again, and hopefully have more time to talk now the headless chicken running is less of a concern. I miss our relatively lengthy, pun-laden conversations. I think I still owe you a drink, so please do remind me of that.

Good luck on quitting smoking. I’ve never smoked, so I don’t know how hard it is, but people who have done so tell me that it’s Hard AF. Apparently nicotine patches are a great way to get high without smoking weed, so maybe that’s a route go to down.

  • Looking forward to seeing you again! I love your enthusiasm and your film quote. :)
